Mother and Daughter Remanded in Shocking Alleged Murder of Police Superintendent

Freetown, Sierra Leone — In a high-profile case drawing significant public attention, Kashopeh Smith and her daughter, Remi Smith, were remanded on Monday, 28 October 2024, by Magistrate Santigie Bangura of Pademba Road Court No. 2 over the alleged murder of Police Superintendent Arnold Adeyemi Coker. The mother-daughter duo appeared in court facing four serious charges, including murder and perverting the course of justice.

According to court documents, it is alleged that on 2 September 2024, at No. 37 Carr Street, Hastings, Freetown, Kashopeh Smith murdered Superintendent Coker. Additional charges against her include fabricating evidence with intent to obstruct justice. Remi Smith, the daughter, is accused of concealing knowledge of her mother’s alleged crime and attempting to pervert the course of justice.

The case is being prosecuted by ASP Wellington, who informed the court that witnesses were not yet present, requesting a short adjournment to arrange their testimonies. Defense counsel Claudius Campbell expressed frustration over delays, emphasizing the need for a swift trial given the lengthy detention of the accused. Magistrate Bangura acknowledged the defense’s concerns and scheduled the next hearing for 31 October 2024, with both accused remaining in remand.
