Sierra Leone’s national stadium will be shut down by authorities for urgent repairs, a senior government official said on Monday.
The Minister of Sports Ibrahim Nyelenkeh said in Freetown that, the Chinese who will undertake the project are now in town and work will commence on February 25. He said that the repairs work is expected to last for two years.
It could be recalled that Siaka Stevens stadium has been bannedon several occasionsby International football governing bodies because of poor facilities.
The Minister said that no activity will be held at the stadium including the local leagues during the renovation.
“We know it will affect our qualifying but we have our neighboring countries which we have been using and we still have good relationship with them. So we hope to continue that relationship in ensuring that we play our qualifiers,” Nyelenkeh said.
