The Chairperson of the National Commission for Democracy (NCD), Madam Marian Angela Samu was the keynote speaker at the St Andrew’s Secondary School ‘Platinum Founder’s Day’ celebration in Bo City on Thursday.
She said that the very mention of the institution evokes a sense of pride as they gathered to reflect on its rich history, celebrate remarkable achievements, and chart a course towards an even brighter tomorrow.
“Our theme for today’s celebration, ‘Utilizing the Values of Education for a Brighter Tomorrow,’ encapsulates the essence of St Andrew’s Secondary School’s mission and vision. As we delve into the heart of this prestigious institution, we recognize that education here is not merely a conduit for acquiring knowledge but a transformative force that moulds individuals into leaders, thinkers, and contributors to society,” Madam Angela Samu said.
She said that the theme of the celebration resonates deeply with the ethos of St Andrew’s Secondary School, emphasizing that education extends beyond mere knowledge acquisition. “It is a transformative journey that instils values, cultivates character, and empowers individuals to contribute meaningfully to society.” Throughout its illustrious history, she said, St Andrew’s has been a crucible of academic excellence and ethical and moral development adding that the emphasis on values such as integrity, resilience, and a commitment to community service has been integral to the school’s mission.
Madam Angela Samu said, “Today’s theme challenges us to reflect on how these values, imbibed within the hallowed halls of St Andrew’s, can serve as guiding principles for shaping a future that is academically brilliant, socially responsible, and ethically grounded.”
“It calls for a holistic approach to education that equips students with the knowledge and the ethical compass to navigate the complexities of the world they will inherit.”
She said that the school is recognized as a trailblazer in the educational landscape, having set the bar high as the first co-educational secondary school in the provinces and a pioneer in introducing the sixth form in a co-educational school in our region.
“The seven-decade journey of this institution, marked by resilience and dedication, is a testament to its unwavering commitment to educational excellence,” she said.
She lauded the school’s remarkable achievements, especially considering the absence of significant external support throughout its illustrious history.
“The distinguished alumni, including Hon I. B. Kargbo, Hon Nenneh Lebbie, Hon Amie Moriba, Dr Abass Bundu, Speaker of Parliament, Dr. Samura Kamara, Jacob Jusu Saffa, Dr. David Francis, Dr Julius Sandy, Kanja Sesay, Commissioner Joyce Tejan Kella, Dr Momoh Foh, Dr Dankona Wuseni, Frances Kamara Director Ministry of Education, to name but a few, exemplify the calibre of individuals nurtured within these walls. Their contributions to government, the private sector, and society underscore the values instilled during their formative years at St Andrew’s. Today, I stand before you as the Chairperson of the National Commission for Democracy, a testament to the school’s transformative impact,” Madam Angela Samu

She said that the school has not only withstood the test of time but has flourished, leaving an indelible mark on the educational landscape. “The success stories of its alumni echo through the corridors of time, a testament to the transformative power of education imparted within these walls.”
She said that they must confront pressing issues such as completing the school’s fencing to safeguard its land, reopening boarding facilities, and constructing additional classroom blocks to alleviate overcrowding. “These challenges demand our collective attention and commitment to ensure St Andrew’s continued success and growth,” she said.
“As we stand at the threshold of a brighter tomorrow, let us collectively pledge our support to address the current challenges facing St Andrew’s. By safeguarding the school’s land, enhancing boarding facilities, and expanding infrastructure, we ensure that future generations benefit from the same quality education that has defined St Andrew’s for the past 70 years.”
