FREETOWN – On Friday, January 31, 2025, the Sierra Leone Correctional Service (SLCS) experienced a significant leadership change as Brigadier David Thomas Gaujah, the outgoing Acting Director General, officially handed over the reins to the newly appointed Director General, Joseph John Senessie.
The symbolic handover ceremony took place at the Director General’s office in New England Ville, Freetown, and was attended by senior SLCS officers.
In his remarks, Brigadier Gaujah praised the staff for their dedication and commitment, emphasizing that a solid foundation had been laid for the institution’s future growth. He encouraged them to embrace their responsibilities, highlighting the importance of continuity in strengthening the correctional system.
Following the ceremony, the outgoing and incoming officials conducted an on-the-spot visit to an ongoing three-story building construction site adjacent to the SLCS headquarters. Brigadier Gaujah reiterated that infrastructure remains a major challenge for the Correctional Service, noting that past government efforts focused primarily on the Judiciary and Military in the post-war institutional recovery phase. He pointed out that the SLCS administrative building is currently owned by the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Service, stressing the urgent need for a permanent facility.
Speaking at the event, Director General Joseph John Senessie acknowledged Brigadier Gaujah’s impactful contributions to the Correctional Service. He urged staff to unite and collaborate, emphasizing that the standard set by his predecessor must be maintained.
“We must work with a clear conscience to achieve meaningful results and change the narrative of the institution,” Senessie stated.
He further assured staff of his commitment to driving reforms and enhancing security, operations, and infrastructure within correctional facilities across the country.
The transition marks a new chapter for the SLCS as it seeks to strengthen its institutional framework and improve correctional services nationwide.
