Oko Environmental Holding Limited, a tree plantation and forestry investment company, continues to expand its operations in Sierra Leone, contributing to environmental sustainability and economic development. Established in 2022, the company has accelerated its reforestation and climate resilience initiatives across five chiefdoms in Port Loko District: Bakeh Loko, Bureh, Kasseh, Tainkatopie, Makama, and Kamasondo.

A key component of Oko Environmental Holding Limited’s efforts is its 450-hectare tree plantation in Roforkor Village, Bureh Chiefdom. The company has planted thousands of trees as part of its long-term commitment to reforestation, aiming to combat deforestation and mitigate climate change.

Beyond environmental conservation, the company has created significant employment opportunities for local residents. Initially, 40 workers were hired for plot preparation, and as operations expanded, an additional 140 workers joined, bringing the total workforce to 180.

The lease agreement for the plantation was signed by Bureh Chiefdom Regent Chief Mohamed S. Kamara and Section Regent Chief Pa Bundu Sesay. Manager Adonis Bockarie Kamara confirmed that Oko Environmental Holding Limited has been consistently paying surface rent to landowners, honoring its commitments outlined in the lease agreement.

However, despite the company’s positive impact, Bureh Chiefdom has faced land-related disputes. Some community stakeholders have raised concerns about transparency in the leasing process and the exclusion of certain voices in decision-making. Additionally, incidents of plantation burning have posed challenges, but company leadership remains steadfast in its mission, assuring stakeholders that operations will continue undeterred.

As part of its corporate social responsibility, Oko Environmental Holding Limited has undertaken various community development projects, including:

  • Construction of water wells to enhance access to clean drinking water
  • Provision of toilet facilities for improved sanitation
  • Educational scholarships for local students
  • Building a grain store to support agricultural sustainability
  • Establishment of a community school
  • Development of a dry floor and storage facility

Manager Kamara emphasized the importance of integrating commercial tree plantations with the traditional livelihoods of local communities. He noted that assorted tree crops are essential sources of food and income for residents, underscoring the need for a sensitive approach that respects customary land rights and community needs.

Despite challenges, Oko Environmental Holding Limited remains committed to fostering environmental sustainability while improving local livelihoods, positioning itself as a key player in Sierra Leone’s reforestation and climate resilience efforts.
