Kabala, Sierra Leone – In a significant development for community broadcasting in northern Sierra Leone, Radio Bintumani in Kabala has received a 1,000-watt transmitter, a 1,500-watt output meter, and four new studio microphones, thanks to the generous support of an Italian organization dedicated to strengthening independent media in the country.

In addition to assisting the radio station, the Italian delegation also provided special computers to the Kabala School for the Blind, aiming to help visually impaired students learn more efficiently and develop essential skills.

The primary goal of this support is to expand the station’s coverage, ensuring that more communities in Koinadugu District and beyond can access reliable information and educational programs. This intervention, coordinated by Peter Bayuku Konteh, comes at a crucial time when local radio stations across Sierra Leone are struggling with financial and technical challenges that hinder their ability to deliver accurate and timely information.

As one of the most influential community media platforms in Koinadugu, Radio Bintumani plays a crucial role in informing, educating, and empowering local residents. The Italian assistance aims to enhance the station’s capacity, improve broadcast quality, and ensure long-term sustainability.

For many residents in Kabala and surrounding areas, radio remains their primary source of information. High illiteracy rates, limited internet penetration, and poor road networks make newspapers and digital platforms inaccessible, making Radio Bintumani vital in bridging the information gap.

Despite its significance, Radio Bintumani has faced major operational challenges, including limited funding affecting daily operations, outdated equipment leading to poor broadcast quality, and frequent power outages disrupting programming. Recognizing the critical role of community radio, the Italian organization stepped in with crucial technical support.

The donation was met with excitement from station staff and residents. To mark the occasion, Kabala hosted a cultural celebration featuring performances by Goboi, Baby Yalla, and Matoma—some of the most popular traditional music groups in Koinadugu District.

Acting Station Manager Alhajie Baba Kamara described the support as a game-changer for Radio Bintumani. The facilitator, Peter Bayuku Konteh, expressed gratitude, stating, “They have provided us with a transmitter covering over 120 miles, studio microphones, and a mixer. They also donated specialized computers to the Kabala School for the Blind, which will help students become valuable members of the community.”

Dr. Sandro, the head of the Italian delegation, a medical doctor and former radio worker, spoke on behalf of the team, saying, “I know how important radio is—it educates people and keeps them informed about their surroundings.” He added that they were very happy to render their support to the people of Koinadugu.

Foday Jalloh, the Paramount Chief, speaking on behalf of residents, thanked the Italians and Konteh for their generosity. “We are more than happy about these donations,” he said.

The intervention at Radio Bintumani highlights the urgent need for international partnerships to support independent media in Sierra Leone. Across the country, many community radio stations face financial and logistical difficulties, making external support crucial.

This collaboration between the Italian organization and Radio Bintumani serves as a model for future initiatives, inspiring similar support for other struggling radio stations. Strengthening local media is not just about providing information—it is about promoting press freedom, democratic engagement, and social accountability.

The Italian support for Radio Bintumani represents a major step forward in strengthening community media in Koinadugu District. By addressing technical, financial, and educational challenges, this intervention will expand the station’s reach, improve program quality, and empower local residents.

Beyond broadcasting, this partnership highlights a commitment to community empowerment, education, and sustainable development. With continued support and strategic planning, Radio Bintumani is set to become a model for impactful community broadcasting in Sierra Leone.
