Freetown, August 26, 2024 – Fantacee Wiz, a well-known Sierra Leonean folksinger and human rights activist, has written an open letter to Sierra Leoneans, including her fans, expressing her deep concern over the ongoing issue of domestic violence in Freetown. In the heartfelt letter, she also announced that she will be taking a break from her advocacy work to focus on her mental health and healing.
Fantacee Wiz, who has been a vocal advocate for vulnerable women and survivors of abuse, shared that her recent involvement in cases of domestic violence has triggered memories of her own traumatic experiences, including sexual assault and rape. These memories have resurfaced with such intensity that she now feels the need to step back to prioritize her well-being.
In her letter, she wrote, “Dear Friends, Supporters, and Beloved Community. I write this letter with a heavy heart, yet also with a sense of hope and determination. Over the years, I have dedicated myself to advocating for human rights, social justice, and the rights of vulnerable women, many of whom have faced unimaginable pain and trauma. As someone who has personally survived sexual assault and rape, this work is deeply personal to me. However, recent events and the cases I’ve been working on have brought back my own traumatic experiences, and it has taken a toll on my mental health.”
She continued, “The weight of the trauma, both old and new, has become too much to bear, and I’ve found myself in a place where I need to prioritize my own well-being. After much reflection and on the advice of professionals, I’ve decided to take a much-needed break to focus on my mental health, my family, and my healing journey. I don’t know how long this break will last, but I do know it’s necessary.”
Fantacee Wiz also reassured her supporters that despite her temporary hiatus, the ongoing fundraising efforts for victims of domestic violence will continue. She encouraged her followers to check her official page for details on how they can contribute to the cause, emphasizing the importance of their continued support.
“I love you all, and I promise I will be back, stronger than ever, ready to continue the fight for justice and healing for all those who have been affected by abuse and violence,” she concluded.
Fantacee Wiz’s open letter has resonated with many, shedding light on the toll that advocacy work can take on mental health and the importance of self-care, even for those on the front lines of social justice. Her decision to take a break underscores the need for mental health awareness, especially among those who dedicate their lives to helping others.
