Renowned Sierra Leonean musician and cultural icon Anthony Seydu is set to be honored with the prestigious SLAAM Presidents Choice Award on April 4, 2025. The Sierra Leone Association of Artists and Musicians (SLAAM) will host the event as part of its 10th anniversary celebrations, recognizing artists who have significantly influenced the nation’s music and cultural heritage.

Seydu is celebrated for his dedication to preserving and modernizing palm wine music, a traditional genre deeply ingrained in Sierra Leonean and West African culture. Known for blending acoustic guitar melodies, African percussion, and storytelling, Seydu’s artistry embodies Sierra Leone’s cultural identity while captivating global audiences.

Throughout his career, Seydu has released critically acclaimed songs such as “Salone,” a heartfelt homage to Sierra Leone’s beauty and resilience, and “Tunga,” which delves into themes of migration and longing for home. Other notable works include “Kele Ti Munu,” rich in cultural storytelling, “Dunia,” reflecting wisdom from African elders, and “Barmine,” a rhythmic fusion of palm wine guitar, percussion, and soothing vocals.

Expressing gratitude during an interview with Premier News on March 28, 2025, Seydu highlighted the significance of this recognition, stating, “Music is more than sound; it is history, identity, and a bridge that connects generations. Being acknowledged for this journey means so much—not only to me but to the entire community that has supported and inspired my art.”

The SLAAM Awards ceremony promises an evening of celebration, showcasing Sierra Leone’s artistic talent through live performances that will emphasize the richness of palm wine music. Guests will also have the opportunity to join Seydu at his VIP table as part of the festivities.

Giileh Kebbie Scholz, founder of SLAAM, expressed excitement over this milestone event, noting, “This year marks a decade of celebrating Sierra Leonean artistry. Join us for an unforgettable evening honoring achievements and fostering a legacy of excellence.”

Over the years, SLAAM has championed Sierra Leone’s creative industries, recognizing exceptional talent through its prestigious awards. This year’s ceremony will feature musicians, actors, filmmakers, and other creative professionals, introducing new categories and showcasing emerging talents.

As the SLAAM Awards continue to grow, the association reaffirms its commitment to advancing the creative and economic vitality of Sierra Leone’s entertainment sector, ensuring a vibrant future for the nation’s artists and cultural expression.
