At least nine people have been killed and 25 others injured when a Mercedes Benz Truck rammed into a stationary Vehicle along at Rochen Village, Yoni Mamala Chiefdom, along the Mile 91/Moyamba Junction highway in the early hours of Saturday, April, 23, 2022.
The dead include three women and a child. There are fears that the death toll may rise.
It’s not clear what caused the crash, but according to officials of the Sierra Road Safety Authority (SLRSA), the Benz truck was coming from Freetown when it rammed into the stationary vehicle.
A team of SLRSA personnel (Road Safety Corps) from Moyamba led by the Executive Director of the SLRSA, Reverend Smart K Senesie, with support from the Traffic Division of the Sierra Leone Police in Mile 91, conveyed the injured to the MSF Hospital in Mile 91 and the Emergency Hospital in Freetown. The Driver of the vehicle, Musa Kamara is currently hospitalised at the Moyamba Government Hospital.
The 91/Moyamba Junction highway has been a regular spot for road crashes dues to the curves of the road.
According to data from the SLRSA, 867 people (501 were adult male, 334 adult female and 32 children) died in 2020 out of a total of 2,763 crashes.
The data shows that 770 people suffered seriously injuries while 834 suffered slight injuries from those crashes.
In 2019, 519 people including children lost their lives in road crashes compared to 867 reported in 2020.
