Sierra Leone: Chinese medics to save many lives

The 22nd batch of Chinese Medical Team (CMT) has arrived in Sierra Leone over the weekend and has started working at the Jui hospital on Wednesday September 23, 2020.

The Team Leader of this batch Dr Feng said they are very happy to be in Sierra Leone to help save lives, adding that what they have seen, and the handing over from the 21st batch has given them the zeal and determination to do more than their predecessors.

“We are coming from the same hospital in Xiangya and we have come to make sure that we save many lives as possible. In as much as we are here to help bring an end to the coronavirus, we will definitely try to help in other ailments because the reason why we came to Sierra Leone is to save as many lives as possible,” he said.

Dr Feng said that 20 of them arrived and within the team they have two general surgeons, three nurses, traditional chinese medical doctor, ultra sound specialist, radiologist, pediatrician, infective disease doctor, ophthalmology, cardiologist, etc.

The Coordinator of the 22nd batch, Dr Shawn said the 21st batch did very well, and commended them for even staying more than the one year period. “What they did was exceptional as they were able to treat so many coronavirus patients including a baby, which was unprecedented,” he said.

He said they are happy to have learnt a lot from their predecessors and they hope to get a very good working relationship with the local staff at the hospital,  and they will help in training them as well as find opportunities for them to study in China.

“We will make sure that all the COVID-19 patients in the hospital are well taken care of and we are ready to treat others. We are very pleased to be in Sierra Leone and the weather is so encouraging. We have now moved to the hospital so that we will be very close to our work station, as the other teams have done. We will make friends and we will continue to promote the Sino-Sierra Leone relationship as we will be happy to be in Sierra Leone as both countries will celebrate Golden Jubilee of bi-lateral relationship next year.”
