Sierra Leone: CHO testifies in case of fratricide

Aminata Sana, a Community Health Officer in Wilberforce Village, on Thursday July 16, 2020 testified before Magistrate Marke Ngegba of court No.2 that Ibrahim Conteh, a man whom she had treated, but later died after he had been brought unconscious to the Heath Centre following a fight he had had with Francis Conteh, his brother. Francis Conteh is charged with murder contrary to law.

According to the police, on October 23, 2019 at Wilberforce Village, the accused Francis Conteh allegedly murdered Ibrahim Conteh.

Led in evidence by Inspector A. T. Bangura, the witness recalled that on October 23, 2019, she was on duty when the deceased was brought to the Wilberforce Village Health Centre unconscious.

Sana added that her colleague, Edward Ellie, the Chief Health Officer, instructed her to treat the patient after informing her that the patient’s situation was due to a fight he had had between the accused and the deceased.

She said she refused to commence the treatment of the deceased without the presence of the police, but later proceeded to treat him after she had been instructed by the police to treat him. She said she observed the patient for a while and administered a 75 milligrams Declofenac injection to the deceased due to the pain he had sustained, and because both of his limbs were by then motionless.

She informed the court that as she attempted to resuscitate the deceased she called for an ambulance, and when it arrived the deceased was referred to the Connaught Hospital. She told the court that  she later made statements at the Wilberforce police post in respect of the matter.

During the cross-examination by Ibrahim Macfoy Esq., the witness said that at the time the deceased was taken to the hospital  he was alive, and as a professional nurse one of her duties is to treat emergencies, but that the circumstances surrounding the case is unique.

At that juncture the defense counsel stated that he would make a no case submission on the next adjourned date.

The accused was remanded, and the matter was adjourned to July 23, 2020.
