Sierra Leone Embassy conducts orientation for students on scholarship in Egypt

The Sierra Leonean Ambassador to Egypt, Morie Fofana has on Wednesday, March 17, 2021, conducted orientation for eight students from Sierra Leone who are currently on scholarship in Egypt.

He congratulated the students on their success on acquiring the scholarship from the Government of Sierra Leone, adding that they should use their time meaningfully while pursuing their education.

Amb. Morie said that the scholarship would serve as an excellent opportunity for the deserving students to expand their awareness on empowerment which would enable them to be prudent decision makers in the future.

He wish them well as they embark on their transit into top universities and high grades  schools in Egypt, adding that they should ensure that they  give more attention to their course,  and that they should ensure to enrich themselves  with knowledge during their period of study.

He advised the students to adhere to the laws of Egypt. He also admonished them to channel their concerns relating to the scholarship and wellbeing to the Embassy for redress.

The President of Sierra Leone Students Union in Egypt, Umar Bah, expressed concerns over the scholarship awarded to the students, adding that students were faced with issues relating to the details of the scholarship including entitlement when they arrived.

“Most of the students drop out of programs due to the fact that they have to either start from a lower level which is below the level that they had attained in Sierra Leone,” Bah said.

He called on the Ministry of Higher Education to support them as students who arrived in Cairo received hospitality from the meagre fund they generated through their monthly contribution. He pleaded to the Ministry to support them with funding.

The Student Union President presented a comprehensive list of all students studying in Egypt, and highlighted their concerns and put forward recommendations in the form of a position paper to the Government of Sierra Leone through the Embassy.
