The National Head (Master) of artisanal fishermen in Sierra Leone, Salifu Kamara, has on Sunday, October 18, 2020, installed four persons to serve as Master Fishermen and Harbor Masters in Rokupa Wharf in the East of Freetown.
The appointees are: Sorie Fornah, aka, ‘Follah’, Lamin Kargbo both appointed as Master Fishermen, and Alie Bangura and Momoh Bangura who were appointed as Harbor Masters.
The Ceremony attracted stakeholders of the Portee and Rokupa communities, local fishing inhabitants and members of the Sierra Leone Artisanal Fishers’ Consortium.
The National Master Fisherman, Salifu Kamara, hopes that the appointment of the four will ensure development of the local fishing industry especially for women who trade in fish daily to support their homes.
Elder Pa Alimamy Amphis Kamara of the Portee Wharf said that the appointment and inauguration of the four is significant to the community because it will bring development and sanity to them.
“I appealed to the National Master Fisherman not to forget the appointed candidates and the community in their fishing activities,” he said.
Another elder in the community, Pa Alimamy Ansoryelah Kargbo III, said that the candidates chosen by the National Master Fisherman in the country is a blessing in disguise and he would continue to honor his support to them as long as they work relentlessly for the people in their various positions appointed.
Fatmata Cecilia Williams, Councilor of Ward 409 of Portee Community, commended the delegation for their intervention in the long awaited dream of the community for this appointment schedule.
She said, “We all are praying sustainable developments; also I thanked them for their concerns.”
