Sierra Leone: Fullah Progressive Union establishes national headquarters

The Fullah Progressive Union (FPU) on Sunday November 29, 2020, established its national headquarter situated at No.1 Sall Drive, Cockle Bay in Freetown.

The opening of the headquarters brought several respected personalities within the Fullah community in Sierra Leone and other dignitaries from all works of life.

The Fullah Union was established to resist discrimination against Fullahs in the country. The Fullahs were perceived to be not among the ethnic groups which were truly from Sierra Leone, and the Union advocated for their integration into the rest of society.

Vice President Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh was guest speaker at the occasion, and he noted that even though the office would be primarily dealing with Fullah interest, it will also be open to every Sierra Leonean.

He said that in spite of all their political differences as stakeholders of the Union their relationship as members of the same ethnic group is paramount which he said would ensure the progress of the Union in solidarity.

Vice President Jalloh noted that the priority of the union is to support education by giving scholarships to the less privileged which is in line with the government flagship program.

The main opposition leader in Parliament, Hon. Chernor Maju Bah, pointed out that unity of  purpose should be the main focus of the union, adding that the structure that had been established should support the current president of the union to achieve its objectives.

“Without human capital development no nation will succeed. We appreciated the president and his team for making education a priority, because its complements the government’s strides in education. There was a point in time when Fullahs would search for lawyers, bankers, doctors but to no avail, today we have Fullahs in all works of life in Sierra Leone,” he said.

The president of the Union, Alhaji Umaru Barrie, said that the Union had involved in numerous national development projects recently in the fight against COVID-19 and giving scholarship to deserving students.

He added that their next goal is to expand and establish branches in every region of the country and the endorsement of their constitution in their upcoming delegate meeting in December.
