John Keister, the Head Coach of Sierra Leone’s senior male national team, Leone Stars, has over the invited 51 home based footballers to commence training in preparation for an upcoming two-legged clash between Sierra Leone and Nigeria.
Leone Stars will play the two matches as part of the Total African Cup of Nations – Cameroon 2022 qualifiers against Super Eagles on the 9th and 17th November 2020 in Lagos and Freetown respectively.
Sierra Leone sits at the bottom of Group L with 1 point out of two matches, whiles Nigeria on the other hand leads the group with 6 points after wins in all two of its matches.
Some football fans registered dissatisfaction immediately Keister released the list announcing the 51 selected players. They are dissatisfied because government has yet to lift the ban on sporting activities in the country, unlike governments of some other countries who have gone far in their preparation.
They said that previous fixtures which Leone Stars had played with Nigeria had been difficult ones and, “we need early preparation in order to see how best we can make something out of the two legs”. “We are calling on the ministry of sports and the National Sport Authority to see how best they can come up with something this week because time is not in the country’s favor ,”they said.
They are of the view that, the back-to-back encounters could be a difficult task for the coaches because the players have stopped playing football for almost six months.
