The Krio Descendants ‘Yunion’ (KDY), with funds from diaspora and it parent body, has concluded its fifth annual free health care treatment at Aberdeen community in Freetown.
The KDY has been providing health outreach to residents of local communities for the past four years complimenting government’s effort in providing healthcare services for the nation.
On Saturday December 19, 2020 Waltona Cummings, the Outreach Team Leader of the ‘Yunion’, informed this medium, that “The Krio Descendant ‘Yunion’ Freetown and diaspora is giving a Christmas gift to the Aberdeen Community with health care to men, women and children without discrimination.”
She added that they limited the number to 300 people who got the free treatment and gift with supports from diaspora region globally, because of COVID-19, saying that lots of the fund had to be raised by the parent body in Sierra Leone.
She further explained that doctors and nurses were doing initial assessment, vision screening, blood tests, clinical breast examination, medical education and dispensary, and making referrals to the Aberdeen health centre.
The President of KDY, Mrs. Cassandra Garber, explained that as the parent body, they provided the venue for the medical outreach. “This free health outreach will go a long way because what we have witnessed today is a clear demonstration of Creole’s involvement in supporting government initiatives.”
She also added that to join the union there is guideline – one of your parents must be Krio.
Haja Thaibi Daramy, 90, who benefitted from the treatment acknowledged and appreciated the KDY for their timely intervention. She remarked that she was very happy with the work the ‘Yunion’ did in Aberdeen, adding that the treatment she received would have cost a lot of money, “but they did it for free.” “I want to thank God and hope they will succeed in what they are doing as a group.”
“My eyes have been disturbing me for quite a while, but coming to the centre I was provided with a pair of glasses,” she added.
