The Ministry of Youth Affairs (MoYA) in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (MAFS) has in a press release said that they have implemented the Chiefdom Youth Farm Project in fourteen districts in Sierra Leone.
The Chiefdom Youth Farm Project is designed by the Government of Sierra Leone to alleviate employment among young people as well as boost the production of rice in the country.
According to the press statement, the project seeks to create employment opportunities for ten thousand (10,000) young people, fifty from each chiefdom, where they would collaborate during the farming season with the potential to create further opportunities for value chain addition.
The Ministry of Youth would cultivate 8000 hectares of rice farm with 40 hectares in each district.
“Selected groups would be provided with seedlings, fertilizers, machines, training on modern agricultural techniques, growth enhancement and farm implements to support their farm activities,” MOYA said in their press statement.
MOYA citied that the project is a way of empowering youth to be self-sufficient and to become players in the private sector, and to contribute to national economic growth.
