Four officials from various institutions including the Ministry of Information and Communications, the National Commission for Civic Education and Development (NaCCED), Women in the Media Sierra Leone and Network Movement for Justice and Development (NMJD) have joined other countries in the West African region to strengthen synergies for the promotion of the right of access to information and women’s right to communicate in the Royal Hotel, Senegal.
Organised by PANOS West Africa Institute (PIWA) in collaboration with UN Women, UNESCO and other partners, the objective of the three days colloquium is to promote “gendered” access to “gendered information” with specific focus on sensitizing stakeholders (including media institutions, national and regional institutions in charge of the promotion of women’s rights and the rights of, and to, information) on the need for “gendered” access to “gendered information”; facilitate the exchange within countries and at regional level of initiatives, experiences and good practices in the promotion to Right to Access Information (RTI), and its follow-up.
It is also aimed at proposing courses of action, including the regional level, to consolidate and accelerate the promotion of access to information in general and gendered access to information in particular and its follow-ups.
The conference which started on Tuesday (8 Dec. 2020) was officially launched by the Minister of Justice, Mamadou Saliou SOW. It is animated by national and international experts on issues of communication and RTI followed by interactive and operational plenary presentations and group work which aims at deepening and strengthening the sharing of initiatives and formulating recommendations.
Participants from Sierra Leone include: the Acting Director of Information, Mr. Emmanuel A B. Turay; the Chairman of NaCCED, Mr. Kalilu Tutangay; the President for WIMSAL, Femi Coker; and Mabinty M. Kamara of NMJD.
