In a whirlwind turn of events, Sierra Leone has sensationally returned to the WAFU U17 Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers, just hours after being disqualified for eligibility violations. The disqualification, which also affected Guinea and Guinea Bissau, was based on alleged breaches of age restrictions detected by MRI tests. However, Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) wasted no time in launching a fierce protest, claiming their players had been tested before departure.
Ibrahim Kamara, head of media at SLFA, announced the victory, confirming that Sierra Leone had been reinstated for the October 22, 2024, tournament in Senegal, following a retest of the MRI scans. Guinea remains disqualified, while Guinea Bissau, like Sierra Leone, has been allowed back into the competition.
Kamara acknowledged the emotional toll on the young athletes, but assured the nation that the team was in high spirits. This marks the second time Sierra Leone has faced such controversy, following a similar incident in 2021 under then-SLFA president Isha Johansen’s tenure.
Outraged fans have voiced concerns about potential foul play by tournament organizers, while others criticized the medical facilities involved. “If ECOMED is failing us, let’s switch hospitals—even if it costs more!” one angry supporter stated.
As the dust settles, Sierra Leone is now focused on seizing this second chance in the prestigious tournament.
