Sierra Leone: SLFA electoral committee updates nominees

The Electoral Committee of the Sierra Leone Football Association has updated nominees for electable posts in the upcoming SLFA election.

The event took place at a meeting held at the New Brookfields Hotel, during which the Chairman of the Electoral Committee, Mr. Oluniyi Robbin-Coker, explained to the nominees that “there have been some delays in the process which has affected the timelines set for the different functions leading to the elective congress, including the publication of the final list of candidates.”

Mr. Robbin-Coker however, promised that the Committee would do its best to bring the electoral process to a logical conclusion within shortest possible time.

The statement went on to reveal that ten (10) out of the seventeen (17) nominees witnessed and participated in the discussions as numerous concerns precedent to the electoral process were addressed.

“The electoral process was highly lauded by all nominees present during their individual submissions and each committed to compliance with the rules to ensure a peaceful process and a successful outcome for football in Sierra Leone,” SLFA Media department stated.

However, the date for the upcoming elective congress still remains as scheduled for the 26-27 February.

In another development, the parliamentary oversight committee on sports has called on the electoral committee to ensure that the election is fair.

The statement came after two successful meetings between the Football family and Parliament resolved as fellowS;

That parliament has assessed the process so far and do hereby admonish all parties including the electoral committee,  the electoral appeals committee, the ethics board, the SLFA secretariat and stakeholders to ensure that the process is free, fair, transparent, independent, impartial and accordance with the provisions and guidelines enshrined in the SLFA Electoral code 2012.

That the process shall create a level playing field meaning all candidates shall have equal right to contest without exceptions and the process shall not be skewed towards granting one person or group of person’s undue advantage.

That the ‘stay action’ is hereby rescinded to allow the committees and judicial bodies to function freely and fairly in accordance with Article 19 paragraph 2 of the FIFA statutes.

That Parliament assures all stakeholders of its commitment to continue to monitor the process which shall be free, fair, credible and transparent.

That Parliament seeks to engage all stakeholders with a view to giving counsel to the Ministry of Sport, National Sports Authority , FIFA and CAF where admissible and SLFA so that they are able to implement paragraphs 1,2 and 3 of these resolutions.

That Parliament urges all stakeholders to remain calm and commit themselves to a peaceful electoral process.
