Freetown, Sierra Leone – September 2024: Sierra Leone has secured a significant international victory in the world of traditional sports and games, as Chief Michael Shamsu Mustapha, President of the African Traditional Sports and Games Confederation, has been appointed Joint Secretary General of the International Council of Traditional Sports and Games (ICTSG).
Mustapha’s appointment, announced by ICTSG CEO Shammi Rana, is seen as recognition of his exceptional contributions to the promotion and preservation of traditional sports and games both within Africa and globally. Rana lauded Mustapha’s efforts, stating, “Traditional sports and games are vital to the cultural heritage of humanity, and your new role aligns with our collective mission to research, preserve, and promote these invaluable traditions.”
This appointment follows the recent launch of the African Traditional Sports and Games Federation Secretariat in Freetown on August 14, 2024. The launch was led by NSA Boss Dr. Emmanuel Saffa Abdulai, marking a significant step in safeguarding Africa’s rich cultural heritage through sports. Additionally, Namibia has been approved to host the first edition of the African Traditional Sports and Games Tournament in 2026.
Mustapha’s new role is expected to further strengthen Sierra Leone’s leadership in the global movement to preserve traditional sports and cultural practices.
