Freetown, April 8, 2025—Tension flared at the Pademba Road Court on Tuesday morning as two Nigerian inmates staged a daring escape attempt from the court’s holding cell.

The prisoners, remanded at the Pademba Road Correctional Centre, reportedly made their move just before their scheduled court appearance. Eyewitnesses described the commotion as the pair attempted to break free, creating chaos within the court premises. The disturbance quickly drew the attention of court officials, security personnel, and onlookers.

The situation intensified as the uproar spilled into the surrounding area, attracting large crowds and causing widespread unease. Court security was temporarily overwhelmed until police officers arrived to control the situation and re-apprehend the escapees.

In collaboration with correctional authorities, the officers swiftly transferred all the inmates in the lockup back to the correctional center as a precautionary measure. A secure correctional vehicle was dispatched to the scene to ensure the safe relocation of the prisoners.

“This was a serious breach that endangered the safety of officers and the public,” remarked one police officer on duty. “Our swift response was critical in preventing a full-scale escape and ensuring the safety of everyone at the court.”

Authorities have since launched an internal investigation into how the attempted escape was orchestrated. Security protocols at the court are also under review to prevent future incidents.

While the identities of the Nigerian nationals remain undisclosed, sources indicate they are facing charges related to fraud and immigration violations. The incident has reignited concerns about the security infrastructure at local courts and the need for stricter measures when handling high-risk inmates.
