UN Summit: President Advocates for Inclusive Global Governance

New York, USA, September 22, 2024 – His Excellency Dr. Julius Maada Bio, President of Sierra Leone, delivered a powerful address at the United Nations Summit of the Future, representing the g7+ group of fragile and conflict-affected nations. He called on world leaders to renew their commitment to global peace, stability, and sustainable development, urging collaborative efforts to tackle the urgent challenges faced by vulnerable countries.

President Bio emphasized the need for inclusive global governance, stating, “These challenges are not theoretical; they are our daily reality.” His remarks centered on the importance of the UN’s “Pact for the Future” as a crucial roadmap for improving conditions for millions worldwide.

Highlighting the priorities of g7+ countries, Bio stressed the importance of national ownership and inclusive governance in conflict-affected regions. He also emphasized the need for global efforts in fostering international peace, securing innovative financing for sustainable development, and promoting science, technology, and digital cooperation.

The Sierra Leonean leader underscored the importance of youth empowerment, advocating for young people to be seen as “active agents of change” rather than passive beneficiaries. In addition, President Bio made a strong appeal for reform of the UN Security Council, advocating for fair representation for Africa in key global decision-making processes.

Bio concluded by calling on world leaders to build trust within fragile states, describing this as the foundation for lasting peace. As the Summit continues, there is optimism that the “Pact for the Future” will inspire positive change in conflict-affected regions.
