Shining Stars: Sierra Leone’s Inspirational Visually Impaired Musicians
In a remarkable display of resilience and talent, the Shining Stars, a group of visually impaired musicians, are captivating audiences with their extraordinary musical skills. Performing on instruments such as the keyboard, seven drums, and the djembe drum, the Shining Stars has become a symbol of hope and inspiration within Sierra Leone’s music scene. The Shining Stars aspire to surpass the achievements of the Blind Musical Flames, another group of visually impaired musicians who paved the way for inclusion in the Sierra Leonean music industry. Speaking on behalf of the group, Abubakar Said Koroma, their leader, shared the profound impact music has had on their lives. “Music is not just a passion for us; it is our voice and a way of showing that disability is not inability. But to elevate our music and expand our reach, we need the tools and opportunities that many others take for granted. We thank and appreciate the Ballanta Academy for making us believe in ourselves that disability is not inability. They motivated us.”
Beyond entertaining audiences, the Shining Stars are determined to use their platform to advocate for greater inclusion and equality for people with disabilities.
