Wan Roof Theater, a prominent theatrical production group based in Freetown, will host an exciting and impactful theatre performance on Saturday, December 7, 2024. The event will feature the performance of Fantasia, a play aimed at reviving the theatre culture in Sierra Leone. The event will be held at the National Railway Museum, located in Cline Town, east of Freetown. This production is not only designed to showcase the rich cultural heritage of Sierra Leone but also to inspire hope in those who may feel hopeless or discouraged.
Fantasia first premiered on Saturday, June 15, 2024, at Hotel Barmoi, located at 75C Cape Road in Aberdeen, before being staged again at Swiss Hotel on 38 Spur Road in Lumley. A subsequent performance took place at Hotel Barmoi on Sunday, June 30, 2024. The production is written by the talented Carlos Velásquez and centers around themes of hope, resilience, and the power of education. It tells the emotional story of a man who battles depression and addiction to Kush, ultimately confronting his internal struggles and the desire for change.
The plot follows a man who, during his darkest moments, perceives his life as being meaningless. Struggling with overwhelming feelings of despair, he is transported to a place called Fantasia—a vibrant world filled with happy, colorful, and sometimes eccentric people. In this otherworldly place, the man is confronted with the challenge of deciding whether to stay in his troubled reality or embrace the joyful possibilities of Fantasia. The central message of Fantasia is that this beautiful world is not just a figment of imagination; it represents the infinite possibilities that exist within each of us. It’s a place that offers solutions to the emotional and psychological struggles we all face. This world is a reflection of the hope, potential, and inner strength that resides within every person.
The team behind Wan Roof Theatre expressed their deep appreciation for the ongoing support shown by their audiences. They extended their heartfelt thanks to everyone who has attended their previous events, which have been vital in reigniting interest in the theatre. “Indeed, you all have shown that together we can bring back our lost theatre. Theatre is a way of life. Let us together bring back quality performances and theatre culture into people’s lives. Your presence is highly recognized. We thank you all for your time and support towards reviving theatre culture in Sierra Leone,” said Aminata Bussor, one of the members of the theatre production team.
Aminata explained that the creation of Wan Roof Theatre was motivated by the desire to rekindle the excitement and joy that the people of Sierra Leone once experienced when the country had a thriving theatre scene. “We want to bring those days back to life,” she said with enthusiasm. Bussor emphasized that the upcoming event is not just about entertainment; it is also an opportunity to educate and inspire the audience. She added that through such performances, people will gain a deeper understanding of the importance of theatre in society.
“Theatre is a platform that offers countless benefits to both individuals and the community at large. It serves as a cultural bridge, preserving and promoting our heritage, and helps in personal development. By supporting these events, we contribute to the preservation of our culture. I am proud that Wan Roof Theatre has brought Fantasia on the stage. It is an important step in the right direction,” she stated with pride.
Wan Roof Theatre was established in 2021 by a group of dedicated volunteers to promote the art of theatre in Sierra Leone and help local theatre actors reach their full potential. Since its inception, the production company has successfully staged two highly praised plays, The Line and Poda Poda, both of which were well received by the public. This renewed interest in theatre signals a bright future for the art form in Sierra Leone, and theatre enthusiasts can look forward to more exciting performances in the months ahead.
