The Western Area Volleyball Regional Championship, held at the Bishop House Complex, National Stadium, concluded with a grand celebration as Forcians (Male) and Young Stars (Female) emerged victorious in their respective categories. The tournament, which began in March 2025, showcased exceptional talent and sportsmanship.
At the end of the finals, Moses P.N. Koroma, Vice President of the Sierra Leone Volleyball Association, delivered a comprehensive overview of the championship. He highlighted the progress, challenges, and memorable moments of the competition. Koroma also emphasized the significance of the trophies and cash prizes awarded to the champions and runners-up, noting their role in motivating teams and raising the competitive standard.
Expressing gratitude, Koroma acknowledged the presence of Madam Augusta James-Teima, Minister of Sports, at the grand finals. “It means a lot to the volleyball family,” he remarked, appreciating her support despite her demanding schedule.
Minister James-Teima celebrated the athletes’ achievements by dancing alongside the Western Region teams. She commended both players and organizers for their efforts in making the tournament a success. “I am happy for you, the Western Region Team, the reason I danced with you,” she said, extending her thanks to the Sierra Leone Volleyball Association for hosting the event.
The Minister stressed the importance of such tournaments in sustaining athlete morale and growth. “There is no way we can sustain you without having such tournaments. If you train all the time without competition, you will get fed up. But now, you can assess yourselves and learn going forward,” she stated.
James-Teima praised the volleyball community for its transparency and development, despite receiving less support compared to football. She assured players and stakeholders of increased government backing, recognizing volleyball’s role in youth engagement and societal transformation. “These athletes are always engaged, which diverts their attention from drugs and other vices. This tournament has improved your capacity, and human capital development is progressing through volleyball,” she added.
The Minister also revealed plans to complete renovations at the National Stadium to provide volleyball athletes with a dedicated space for training and competition.
As the event concluded, James-Teima congratulated the winners and encouraged those who did not win, saying, “You have all made us proud.”
