Freetown, April 4, 2025 – In celebration of World Health Week, the World Health Organization (WHO) has provided Sierra Leone with state-of-the-art medical equipment and logistics worth approximately $380,000. The official handover ceremony took place at the Youyi Building in Freetown.
The donation, financed through the Global Fund, includes two modern buses and advanced laboratory equipment designed to enhance the nation’s healthcare infrastructure. It aims to empower the Pharmacy Board of Sierra Leone and support the national laboratory movement, with a strong emphasis on biosecurity and pandemic preparedness.
Speaking at the event, WHO Country Representative George Ameh reiterated the organization’s dedication to strengthening Sierra Leone’s healthcare systems. “This donation reflects our commitment to ensuring the country is better equipped to manage future health emergencies,” Ameh stated.
Dr. Charles Senessie, Deputy Minister of Health, expressed profound gratitude on behalf of the government. “We are deeply thankful for these generous donations. The equipment is crucial in saving lives and enhancing our fight against pandemics. We assure WHO that it will be used effectively,” he said.
Chief Pharmacist Moses Batema, Chairman of the Pharmacy Board, praised the initiative, highlighting its significance in improving laboratory practices and bolstering essential health services nationwide.
This timely donation aligns with global efforts to build resilient health systems and echoes this year’s World Health Week theme, which emphasizes collaborative action to improve global health outcomes.
