UNICEF Sierra Leone on Friday, April 29, 2023, announces the retirement and departure of Dr. Suleiman Braimoh, the UNICEF Representative in Sierra Leone, effective April 30, 2023.
Dr. Braimoh’s retirement comes after a distinguished career in the United Nations system for over three decades, during which he provided dedicated service to children and their families in Africa, Europe, and Asia, including the last four years as UNICEF Representative in Sierra Leone.
During his tenure, Dr. Braimoh played a pivotal role in strengthening UNICEF’s partnerships with the Government of Sierra Leone, the Diplomatic community, non-governmental organizations, and civil society groups to improve the well-being of children and their families in the country.
Under Dr. Braimoh’s leadership, UNICEF Sierra Leone has contributed significantly to the country’s efforts to provide quality education for all children, including those who are marginalized and excluded. UNICEF has also been instrumental in supporting the Government of Sierra Leone to provide life-saving interventions and services to children and women, particularly in the areas of education, health, nutrition, social protection, and water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH).
Dr. Braimoh has been a champion for children’s rights and an advocate for the most vulnerable and marginalized. He has led UNICEF’s efforts to promote child protection, including the prevention and response to violence, abuse, exploitation, and neglect.
“I am grateful to have had the opportunity to serve the children of Sierra Leone, and I am proud of what we have accomplished together,” said Dr. Braimoh. “I am confident that the dedicated team at UNICEF Sierra Leone will continue to impact the lives of children and young people positively,” he added.
Dr. Braimoh’s successor has been identified and will take over in May to continue the organisation’s mandate of promoting the rights and well-being of every child, and to supporting the government of Sierra Leone in achieving its development goals.
UNICEF Sierra Leone express profound gratitude to Dr. Braimoh for his service to the organisation and the children of Sierra Leone and wish him a happy retirement and all the best in his future endeavors.
